  • Beware of pickpockets

I found this interesting e-mail in my box. Decidedly, it is blog worthy.

About 10 years ago, and still feeling violated..  I gave up ( victimized by pick pockets)  my Christmas shopping $$$ to a pick pocket gang in my home town of Santa Barbara California.
I got the bump and saw the hand off.. but was unable to pursue the thief because his gang literally blocked my way.
I was screaming and yelling my head off for a policeman, everyone kept looking at me instead of the young man heading for the door..
According to the police, they picked me up at the bank where I had withdrawn the $$$ .

Thanks to bank cameras.. they were able to find them and caught them red handed at 'work'.
With the police being so busy today....

I was not able to retrieve my $$$ but knowing they were out of business, however temporary, made me feel a little better, but not $600.00 worth.
I wanted to testify.. but did not have to as there were many more victims.

They were not from Santa Barbara, but were opportunists of the Christmas holidays.

They are everywhere, so you be aware...
My own grandsons were exposed to a pick pocket incident a few years ago..in Italy, and wore their wallets in a tempting way.. they were anxious to mix it up with a would be thief.. lol.
lucky thieves... !  I was just as happy they did not get the chance.

In that vein, I offer you this email I received ....

How To Foil A Pickpocket In A Foreign Country

    Feb. 21, 2011
    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Dear live and invest overseas reader,  ( that is my incognito name, lol.)

"Vicki and I have been perpetual travelers, PTs, for nearly three decades" writes Intrepid Correspondent Paul Terhorst. "We've seen a lot of what this world has to offer, good and bad...including pickpockets.

"In Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Bangkok, Mumbay, and Portland, pickpockets work trains, buses, airports, and other crowded places.

"Pickpockets have tried to hit either Vicki or me perhaps two dozen times over the years. I'd estimate that 1 out of every 10 times I get on a subway, I see a pickpocket at work. One went after me last week here in Buenos Aires...

"How do you spot a pickpocket? And how can you protect yourself? Not to worry. They're easy to foil.

"First, as a rule, pickpockets are young and skinny. I've never seen a fat pickpocket. Once Vicki saw a little old lady working a subway car, so the general rule fails now and again. But, for the most part, pickpockets are young, agile adults.

"Second, they often work in pairs, with the pickpocket quickly passing the score to a partner. That way a pickpocket is never caught with the loot in hand.

"Pairs also work scams together. Vicki saw a middle-aged, motherly woman chat up and desensitize a woman. Then, suddenly, at a stop, 'Mom' got flustered, jumped up, and shoved off, and, in the process, pushed the woman's purse toward an accomplice.

"Similarly, friends were hit by a pair working a hospital elevator in Portland, Oregon. The front man pretended to get caught in the elevator door. While the front man shouted and carried on, his accomplice rifled purses.

"Third, pickpockets bump into you. If you feel someone bumping you, especially around the legs, a pickpocket is likely checking to see how aware you are. Pickpockets love to bump those who seem distracted, those with babies or small children, for example. To test your attention, they bump. On a crowded train, pushing is normal, bumping is not. If a pair is working a mark, one might bump hard on one pocket while other softer, quicker hands slide into another.

"Fourth (here's the most vital point), pickpockets stick close by. When you get on a crowded subway car, you often get stuck in the doorway. That's where pickpockets operate. If you move into the car, they stick with you. They push through behind you and stay very close by.

"Finally, pickpockets want you to look up, not down. A pretty young girl thief will wear a revealing blouse, a boy will wear outrageous jewelry. These people want you looking up, preferably at them, rather than down where they're doing their work.

    "How do you protect yourself?

"You can wear a money belt under your clothes and tuck your money and credit cards into the money belt. If you carry a purse, make sure it's closed and latched.

"Unfortunately I've found that people seldom follow this simple rule. So many pickpockets operate the Paris subways that, when we lived in Paris, we repeatedly warned visitors to make sure their valuables were tucked away. Yet nearly every one of them got pick pocketed. I mean that literally. In our experience, tourists who ride Paris subways often will get pick pocketed. Period.

"We recommend that you keep money in three places. The big money, credit cards, and passports go into a money belt under your clothes. More money and perhaps one credit card go into a more easily accessible change purse or zippered pocket. Finally, small money, for tips and taxis, goes into a front pocket, where most pickpockets work. This way, if successful, they get only the small stuff.

"Finally, push your way into the car. For whatever reason, in France, Italy, Spain, and Argentina, locals crowd in the doorways rather than walking through to the open spaces inside. Pickpockets count on the fact and work the doorways. Your best defense is to push through, excusing yourself along the say. 'Pardon' in French, 'con permiso' in Spanish.

"If you've attracted a pickpocket, he (or she) will follow you in. This is highly unusual behavior in this context. As I said, in the countries mentioned, locals stay crowded in the doorways. The young man or woman who follows you deep into the train, and stays close to you, is a pickpocket. At that point if you're carrying a purse or bag, hold it up in the air to discourage the guy.

"Pickpockets probably hit thousands of tourists a day around the world. Follow these simple steps, and you'll avoid them."

  • New Year re-solutions on track

I know it is early in the year and too early to brag...

Weight.. loss 17... but I am still hovering at a set point, need to get it under the 150 mark.. grr . We are eating much healthier..
.. am thinking about what palatable thing I can do to crash through that.. and not make my body fear it is starving..   like speeding  up my morning walks.

Organizing.. I am still moving in that direction, and now that I can see what there is. I can see what more needs to be done/go.
I have another yard sale is ready to throw the doors open for tomorrow.
Not only have I got more space, I am getting some healthy $$$$S.

In chatting and being the cheer leader (more for keeping myself on track)  I have inspired my friend Mary Ann to organize a neighborhood yard sale and now a second one tomorrow. 4 out of 5 are/were paying for storage units.

We figured out how much each has spent on storing things they barely use or visit..in the past two years.. Amazingly.. they knew.. but hearing it out loud.. made the difference.  11 of us went to lunch yesterday at a new and fine dining restaurant (Indian fare).. all kinds of happy there!
That also takes care of doing things we like.

Storage is a fact of life.. We are all working toward at home Storage Organizing Solutions.

We, the gang are also killing the SOW.. Same Old Way..  We each are telling what we are doing and why..

We found a new charity... to some of  us, Habitat For Humanity stores... right under our noses.
One of our friends works there. Most of use have dropped things off or shopped there from time to time

Since most of us have all gotten rid of the less desirable trinkets.. our quality is is getting better... Clean and fresh inventory sells.
I hold over some things ( only one per) and the rest get boxed and go to Habitat... it usually sells right away.
They have a much larger following and they are open 6 days a week. and not competition for ourselves

Since we live some 45 miles away ... we are going to join the others yard sales.. The more the merrier is always more fun.

Early this week, just minutes before the gathering, we paid off the truck.. over a year earlier..

We saved bigger $$$ over the paulty interest rates the banks are paying a year. and we paid off another credit card.. the one with the higher interest got most of our attention first in the form of additional monthly payments and VOILA!
I have one more to go!!!

I am happy with what we have focused on. It looks like we are All doing better in all the re-solution categories.....from little ACORNS... and all that....lol

That's the new from here.. what is going on in your neck of the woods...

  • Is your emergency preparedness kit up to date?

There ha been a lot of activity regarding Tectonic earth shift and activity on the Pacific Rim...
That is nature of this earth and has not filed a plan other than history...
We are having our own interesting phenomena on the Big Island of Hawaii

I sent his around to friends last week..

"WOW! 68 earthquakes over 1.7 recorded within the last 30 days
I understand that there has been massive earthquake swarms, well over a hundred, not big enough to be put on this map. The magma is in within 235 feet of spilling out of Halemaumau crater ( crater within the crater).
We/scientists can never tell if she will peacefully spill, blow or over run Kalapana again..

Pacific rim of fire has been overly active this year.. have you been watching Chile?
It is well to remember that it is better to grumble and growl than to blow your cork.. lol.

    I just hate the VOG.
It s always a good thing to have your emergency stash/plan updated.... with the coming of the new year and Rim activity and 'K'... beneath our feet..."

  • Year 2011 Re-soulutions

I spotted my list of personal re-soulutions from last year, deposited on the new 'fridge.
Fridge notes have become my new office...

I only wrote down three. That was so I can concentrate.

    1. Weight loss.
    2. Organize
    3. Spend time on what makes me happy

    Weight Loss:
The big hitter was to lose a pound a month, as opposed to gaining a pound a month.
This year weight loss has been a significant success for me.
I am super happy to report that I saw a solid 152... meaning it was there, on the mark and it stayed there when I jumped on and off three times.  (anti cheat test)

    Organizing Self:
I have seriously worked toward organizing myself. That is actually going very well and not so well.
    By the third go around,
...my closet is definitely headed toward being organized, is neat with space between clothes and I can still round up a matched outfit. .
...all drawers and cabinets in my house are orderly. I'm still looking for space so I sold or handed off collections.

My neighbor once commented that I could get up in the dark and find exactly what I wanted.
That is not true, but getting close. it may be that when I reach that point I'll know it's time to stop.

She is the neighbor that noticed my dirty laundry was folded... In my defense, I had NO laundry space except for the basket on the top loading washing machine.
We were always working, either building the house, working on the house or grubbing somewhere. Huge laundry .
That 's how rumors start, lol.

I talk too much story... I'd say Organizing is going well..albeit the melt down last week.
Too much stuff laying around.. waiting for the next yard sale. I did not want to buy boxes to store yard sale thing. I do not want storing things to become a way of life.
When I finally stopped to consider.. Christmas month is a BUSY time..gift shopping, wrapping and shipping, food prep and parties to enjoy quality  time with friends and relatives, and all the other demands on my time, storage boxes are the way to go until ... and then sell the boxes lol.

    3. Spend some time on what makes me happy.
...This one was a bit rough.. too much else to do screaming for my time and attention to
       think about myself.
I was upset with myself that I let this happen.  It had become a way of life, my life and
like any other habit, it took over.

That said.. I think these were pretty good re-soulutions. Good enough for this year with one tiny tiny change.

    1. Spend time on what makes me happy
    2. Weight loss
    3. Organize.

  • Hors de ouers....

....or what ever those yummy little bite sized tidbits are.
I love that the holiday always bring out the new recipes.

I don't have any to share. It has been a dry year.  Brain freeze has kicked in, but somewhere I saw this picture that looked like I'd want to try it.
I cannot remember where I saw the picture and worse, I failed to get the recipe.

     Here is my version...

I used the English cukes. I tried to fancy half peel, but... there must be a better tool than I have.

Cut the cukes down the center and seed.
Turn over on a paper towel and let the juices drain.

In the meantime, finely chop smoked salmon, fresh dill and scallions, and  red onions.
Mix up Sour Creme and wasabe sauce... about half and half (depends on your personal taste).... and have the capers at the ready.

Wipe dry the cukes, layer in the wasabe/sour creme in the trench. Cut into chunks slightly larger than 3/4 inch.
Then make tiny balls of the chopped smoked salmon and onions and push into the cuke centers. Top with a sprinkle of the dill and capers.

There are lots of things you can ad lib.. fresh ginger? or maybe cilantro?

My family enjoys smoked salmon, but after a few day... well, you know. with the help of my friend Google, I find I can freeze what I do not use immediately. Another Google secret is that you can batch freeze... on a metal tray, and I double bag.

The smoked salmon I get is already sliced thin.
I layer the individual slices out and cover with a large baggie and freeze for about 20 minutes and then loosen and turn, freezing for another 10 or 15 minutes.

Use a pair of tongs instead of warm fingers ( that would cause immediate thaw).
Quickly, bag up a portions of what you would normally use and re-bag into a larger bag and pop into the freezer for later use.

Thaw in the 'fridge, they do thaw quickly.

  • Time! I need more time!!!

I had to get on the ball early this morning....to redo something. That took an hour....I cannot believe how much TIME a simple task can take.

I luv mornings, little or no distractions.

By the TIME I got that little project finished it was TIME to feed critters, and clean up after all that.
I need to get back to trying to get critters on dry food and no special diets that require cooking and mixing. A pet gourmet chef I am not.
Then there was empty the dishwasher, clean the coffee pot, which includes the grinding mechanism and straighten up the family room.

Add to my list that my bathroom sink has developed a drip.... unless I get the handle seated just right.
Sometimes I think it is. I see no drips and then wake up to drips about two in the morning. I am glad it bothers me enough to wake me up.

That would be a waste of resources if I had not put a container beneath it, but again, it is a waste of my TIME, my LIFE.

TIME to repair it or change out faucets. Pretty simple, now that Randy has shown me the dot thing. but.....
You guess it.. I just need Time to get to it, take out the unit and run to town to get something replaced. There goes the day~ TIME

What ever takes my time takes my life.
The most precious thing I have is my TIME.
    Life is measured by TIME.

The New Year will be upon us all too soon.
TIME to reflect on what is good in my life and not so good.
What changes will I make and what changes will happen without my hand at the 'TIME BATON'.
Plans for the re-direction of my LIFE / TIME in the coming year have different names.
Some people call them resolutions. That should be spelled resoulutions. ...RE-SOUL utions.

I am not ready to become the wheat in the fields that whip in directions that I have not chosen..
Instead, I will spend a bit TIME to determine the overall directions of my own life and think about those resoulutions for the coming year and still take TIME to smell the roses~

Happy Holidays and a fascinating New Year!

  •
I have always wanted a glider. I had a glider chair once..  and I loved it.

When Kevin was moving to a smaller patio, he put his glider up for sale. I jumped at the chance to own it.

Every time I babysat their Girlz, Freckles and Molly, I'd have my morning coffee, read the paper/magazines/books or knit and watch the world/wild donkeys come by...there snuggled into a cozy corner. Molly on her blanket and Freckles checking out the morning scents left by midnight visitors ( cats) .
I'd have my cup sitting on the lotus lily pad leaf tables with their painted frogs on them.

I know he and Matt liked them, but they were/are the end all favorite with me.

I brought them home and set it in several places on my uncovered patio. They looked good anywhere I set them.
The winds natural WINDS prevented me from sitting there very often.

Early yesterday morning (3:00am) we had a drought breaking rain and I ran to get the pillows under cover.
Right then and there I decided that no mater how crowded, the set was moving to the covered lanai.

I would have to do it on my own... using my favorite 'Do it Yourself tool, a rug.

... around the corner into the hallway

shuffle shuffle furniture and across the family room

I made it to the last doorway.. shifting furniture everywhere out of my way.

It is close..on the narrower side of the lanai, but it does make a perfect wind
    protected reading and knitting spot.

( Picture the stack of magazines on the table top )

and from the other direction  ...

Totally at peace, I had my coffee out there this morning with Daizy and the warm morning sun on my feet.
    How GOOD is that ?

  • Refrigerator trickle down/run around

Steve decided we needed to get us a new 'fridge...
I really wanted one with the French doors and freezer drawers in the bottom.

this huge light assembly takes up one lot of space.....

It is much smaller than the old one

I was planning on the much larger old one living in the garage since his smaller one stopped working.

Steve did not want the larger one in the garage or he would have to move cabinets... so he replaced his and the only dead 'fridge with the same smaller model as his old one.

Kevin and Matt got the old 'fridge

and it looks great in his new place.

They had to cut away inches of counter space to fit it in. It was a major squeeze there, too.
They are planning on new cabinets in the near future ... and will keep this..

I already miss the ice in the door... and the capacity .

    Next time......

  • Why would this cat be laying on his table?

.......instead of the chair with the cushy seat right behind him?

or the swing with his bed roll?

It could be he is warm... 84degrees f .

Maybe he does not want to miss his next meal~
He misses very few. As you can see he is a chubo~ He eats here three times a day at home...and invites himself to Bobbi and John's Advo-cat feeding station.. and at both neighbors on each side, Vanessa and Sheri's.

Maybe he wanted us to notice him doing something different....

I don't have any answers and The Buggah is not talking.

As for my own lunch, I am having Currry... with a side of brown and wild rice.

  • DeeeDee's grape paintings

I spent a few    okay, more than a few hours getting my paint pallet refreshed. Deciding what new and better colors are out there and what I felt I wanted to incorporated into my pallet.

    Decisions decisions decisions.

Once I cleaned up the mess of digging out old colors and refreshing others.. I realized that I had not tested the new colors for non staining... Sigh!

I do have some non-staining color in the bin.. because I cannot find that color in non staining.
Locating good paints are impossible on Island.
I order from my favorite Internet artist suppliers.
It is all by guess and by golly and expensive because of the Hawaii and Alaska shipping gouge.

Sometimes the shipping is way more than the actual cost of the item, so I really have to want it and put up with the 6 week wait time.... that that was another blog.

I have cleaned out the painting space ( art studio ) in the garage so many times things are showing wear.... but it did save my space, even in an over sized 30 x30 garage.

It looks like DeeDee ( my daughter ) is getting her paintings (3) I promised. I sure did not mean it to take so long.

I luv painting fruit .. for obvious reasons ~

These are the sweetest grapes I EVER ate

They were grown on the mainland , Reseeda, California.
I'll have to tell my grocer so he will buy their produce again.

When I got these to paint, I realized the color of the grape leaves were already close.
Such is life. I would have to figure out how to keep some reality and yet make them
stand out in the painting .

With most of my paintings, I ignore it for a day and then I put it in the house, where I will look at it for a few more days. One of my things is to set it upside down or look at it in a mirror. For some reason, needed changes really stand out.

My BIG SECRET!  They all look wonderful and great with a mat around them...

I think it is good enough to put my signature on it.

All ya'll have a nice day!
